Elegance and Good Taste

I wrote a post yesterday about ‘historical taste makers’ and the seminar we had around that. However before that seminar we had a lecture which was the introduction to people with good taste. In particular women, in the fashion industry, with good taste. I’ll be doing some more in depth research into some of these women for another post but for now I wanted to share some quotes from these women about elegance and good taste… I love reading quotes like this and printing them out to stick them around my room.
My favourite is Mary Quants ‘good taste is death, vulgarity is life’. It reminded me of The Vulgar: Fashion Redefined exhibition that I saw at the Barbican a couple of years ago. The exhibition considered challenging and compelling taste. It questioned notions of vulgarity in fashion. It’s quite a interesting thought that in fashion, bad taste, if done well, is considered good taste… However this sort of vulgar taste wouldn’t be considered elegant. So would you rather be elegant or vulgar in your style?
