Fashion and Politics

Since the Women’s March back in January, slogan t shirts were on the rise, especially after Dior showed their ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ t shirt on the runway. I loved all of the political, slogan clothing that brands were producing so I began to look into where fashion politics began. I guess it was back in the 1900’s where women weren’t really allowed to wear trousers… However in 1919 a woman from Puerto Rico challenged mainstream society by wearing a pair of trousers, she was sent to jail for this ‘crime’. It wasn’t long after when people realised that it should be perfectly acceptable for women to wear trousers, so during the second World War it became a lot more normal.
2017 was the year to make a stand, full of protests, people coming forward and a better representation of women. The Women’s March was the largest, single day protest held in American History, attended by millions of women and men all with the same view on feminism. After Trump’s disrespect towards ethnic minorities, transgender people and women, brands began to represent these groups of people. For example, fashion companies started casting diverse models on the runway and in campaigns.

I think it's so important for people to stand up for what they believe in, and for influencers to also join in on encouraging people to have an opinion and to fight for their beliefs.
Hope you enjoyed the read!
