We have been given a new project to complete over christmas. It’s about combining a brand, trend and outcome to see what ideas we can come up with. I’m so excited to get stuck into my first summative report and I’m also happy thats its finally a solo project! (I was getting sick of group work). The brand that I’ve been given is Paul Smith, a designer that I know of but I don’t really know a lot. I have to do some research into him and his brand for my report but I thought I would get an early start on it and include what I find on here.
Paul Smith created his brand in 1970, where he opened his first shop in Nottingham. Beforehand, he worked on Savile Row and took classes in tailoring and eventually went on to show his first menswear collection in 1976. In the 80’s he changed the public’s perception of suits as he took major inspiration from Giorgio Armani. He went on to mold his brand and he created the image that was ‘classic with a twist’. The brand reflects Paul’s personality which is traditionally English and unique. His collections showcase his humor, his admiration of classic English tailoring, and his appreciation of all things quirky. He is heavily involved in the business as he is designer and chairman, because of this the Paul Smith brand maintains a personal touch that some bigger brands no longer have.

I also had a look at the RTW Summer 2018 collection and I am such a fan. I think the collection shows exactly what he is about because it is so colourful, quirky and humorous. My favourite look is the purple tapered trousers paired with a neon blue, Hawaiian shirt (pictured above). I just love how he paired the two colours together when you would think that they would clash.
Do you like Paul Smith or have you never heard of him? I will be writing a survey soon for my project so I might post that on here too!
