The First Monday in May

So a few weeks ago I was scrolling through Netflix to find a new trashy series to binge but instead I ended up on the documentaries and I came across one called ‘The First Monday in May’ directed by Andrew Rossi who directs quite a lot of documentaries set in America. The show focuses on the 2015 Met Gala, following the preparation through to the main event. Many fashion icons starred in it including Anna Wintour, Andre Leon Talley, Riccardo Tisci, Jean Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagerfeld. We watched Anna Wintour gracefully rushing around to prepare for the big night in May (if you didn’t know or hadn’t gathered the Met Gala Ball is on the first Monday in May!). What I found most interesting about the Met Gala is that the exhibition is curated by Andrew Bolton who also curated the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty exhibition. Andrew Bolton was explaining how loved the McQueen exhibition was and how difficult he now finds it to surpass the standards of it as everyone compares his new exhibitions to the McQueen one. He set himself a challenge to make the Met Gala better than ever before. In my opinion I think he did that as everyone was talking about the 2015 Met Gala and that was the first year that I really heard about it and realised that there is a theme behind each exhibition. I really loved watching this documentary as it gave a whole new insight to the event and it referenced lots of things such as Alexander McQueen, Chinese culture, Devil wears Prada and the 2001 Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show. The director also interviewed multiple people from the fashion world so it was interesting to hear their expert opinions. I would love to find similar documentaries to this so if you know any please recommend and if you’re a fashion lover then ‘The First Monday in May’ is a must watch!
