The Lack of Diversity in Make-Up

Representation in the beauty industry is such a big problem. It doesn’t affect me directly but it angers me knowing that there are women who want to wear makeup but companies don’t make shades dark enough for their skin colour or they don’t make colours that compliment their dark complexion. Don’t get me wrong the issue of lack of diversity has improved. In 2015 Rihanna was named as the new face of Dior, she became the first ever woman of colour to front the brand since it was founded in 1946. However despite this mixed race, african american, and asian women are rarely used for magazine advertising, so that straight away is quite discouraging for young girls of these ethnicities. L’oreal took a step in the right direction when they released many new shades of their True Match foundation. They created a campaign which let women know that they cared and they have multiple shades available.

I think it will be a very slow process before we start seeing a range of shades for more groups of people but it will definitely get there. We just need to keep reminding brands that there shouldn’t be 12 light/pale shades and only 2 dark shades.
What’s your opinion?
